چکیده

Introduction The vast majority of scientific community believes that P!=NP, with countless supporting arguments. The number of people who believe otherwise probably amounts to as few as those opposing the 2 Law of Thermodynamics. But isn’t nature elegant enough, not to resource to brute-force search? In this article, a novel concept of dimensionality is presented, which may lead to a more efficient class of heuristic implementations to solve NP complete problems. Thus, broadening the universe of man-machine tractable problems. Dimensionality, as defined here, will be a closer analog of strain energy in nature.

Effective heuristics and meta-heuristics for the quadratic assignment problem with tuned parameters and analytical comparisons

Quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is a well-known problem in the facility location and layout. It belongs to the NP-complete class. There are many heuristic and meta-heuristic methods, which are presented for QAP in the literature. In this paper, we applied 2-opt, greedy 2-opt, 3-opt, greedy 3-opt, and VNZ as heuristic methods and tabu search (TS), simulated annealing, and pa...

Using Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms as Heuristics for NP-Complete Problems

USING NEURAL NETWORKS AND GENETIC ALGORITHMS AS HEURISTICS FOR NP-COMPLETE PROBLEMS William M. Spears, M.S. George Mason University, 1989 Thesis Director: Dr. Kenneth A. De Jong Paradigms for using neural networks (NNs) and genetic algorithms (GAs) to heuristically solve boolean satisfiability (SAT) problems are presented. Results are presented for two-peak and false-peak SAT problems. Since SA...

Recognizing When Heuristics Can Approximate Minimum Vertex Covers Is Complete for Parallel Access to NP

For both the edge deletion heuristic and the maximum-degree greedy heuristic, we study the problem of recognizing those graphs for which that heuristic can approximate the size of a minimum vertex cover within a constant factor of r, where r is a xed rational number. Our main results are that these problems are complete for the class of problems solvable via parallel access to NP. To achieve th...

The Computational Complexity of Probabilistic

We examine the computational complexity of testing and nding small plans in proba-bilistic planning domains with both at and propositional representations. The complexity of plan evaluation and existence varies with the plan type sought; we examine totally ordered plans, acyclic plans, and looping plans, and partially ordered plans under three natural deenitions of plan value. We show that prob...
